Cruz Azul, under the direction of Vicente Sánchez, has found a second wind in the Clausura 2025. In an exciting match corresponding to Matchday 5, the cement workers managed to win 3-2 against the Xolos de Tijuana, who fought until the end, selling their defeat dearly.
A dream first half for Cruz Azul
From the first minutes, the capital team showed its offensive power and quickly took the lead. In the 6th minute, Luka Romero made his debut as a scorer for the Máquina and in the Liga MX with a goal derived from a great collective play. Jorge Sánchez overflowed down the right wing and passed to Giakoumakis, who with first intention and with an elegant ‘heel’ assisted Romero to open the scoring at the border.
Cruz Azul continued attacking and was close to extending the lead in the 9th minute, when Tijuana was saved thanks to the posts in a counterattack by Gonzalo Piovi. However, the persistence paid off after 30 minutes, when Giakoumakis took advantage of a rebound from Jesús Corona to send the ball into the back of the net and make it 2-0 at the Estadio Caliente, where the sky-blue fans were present.
Before the break, La Máquina continued to take advantage of Xolos’ mistakes. Jackson Porozo touched the ball with his hand inside the area, and after a review in the VAR, the referee declared a penalty in favor of Cruz Azul. Carlos Rotondi took responsibility and converted the 3-0, putting his team in a comfortable lead at halftime.
Xolos reacted, but it was not enough
In the second half, Tijuana showed a different face and was close to achieving the comeback. La Pantera Zúñiga led the attempt to react, managing to score twice and bringing Xolos closer on the scoreboard. However, the second goal was disallowed because the ball had gone out of the field before the goal.
Despite the pressure from the locals in the final minutes, Cruz Azul managed to resist and keep the three points on border soil. With this result, La Máquina will sleep in fifth place in the general table, just four points behind the leader León, who beat Mazatlán FC 2-1 in this round.
Cruz Azul continues to show improvement with Vicente Sánchez at the helm and will seek to maintain this level in the next matches to strengthen its position at the top of the classification.
